This butterfly is on the southern most edge of its range in Bulgaria, where it is very local and rare.

It is currently only known from the central Stara Planina. However it occurs just over Bulgaria's NW border in Serbia in the Western Stara Planina (where these photo were taken). It seems likely that it also occurs in the Western Stara Planina within Bulgaria, where there are good areas of potentially suitable habitat. Places where it may occur are not easily accessible except on foot.

Wet boggy herb-rich grassland where its foodplant Bistort (Persicaria bistorta) grows in abundance, especially in gullies alongside mountain streams at or above the tree-line.

Recorded in 1 (0.1%) of the 1900 10km squares of Bulgaria.
