General Information

A widespread species, but local and rarely common in our experience.

Occurs mostly at lower altitudes but occasionally up to about 1200m or a little higher.

It can easily be confused with several of the other Pyrgus species that occur in Bulgaria, notably Olive Skipper (serratulae), Large Grizzled Skipper (alveus), and even in some cases Sandy Grizzled Skipper (cinarae) (specimens with bolder hind-wing markings).

Foodplant(s): Cinquefoils (Potentilla spp.), Wild Strawberry (Fragaria vesca), Common Rock-rose (Helianthemum nummularium)
Flying: According to the literature It has two or three broods and flies from April to September. We have recorded it most frequently in May, but also in June and July.

Habitat

Herb-rich grassy meadows often in hotter dryer rocky areas.

Regional Information

Recorded in 37 (1.9%) of the 1900 10km squares of Bulgaria.

Last recorded in May 2019

Recorded date range (Adult): 04 May to 11 August
