General Information

This is one of two Erebia species occuring in Bulgaria that has chequered fringes to the wings, the other being the Arran Brown (Erebia ligea). Some specimens can be mistaken for the usually larger Arran Brown as some Large Ringlets have white areas on the underside of the hindwing, especially in the females.

Overwinters as Overwinters as a larva.

Habitat

Sheltered grassy places especially near coniferous woodland. However some specimens may stray well above the tree line.

Regional Information

Locally common in the mountains above 1000m


Recorded in 18 (0.9%) of the 1900 10km squares of Bulgaria.
