General Information

This species is larger than the other chestnuts. It has two or three small black markings in the orbicular stigma, which are diagnostic.


Pupates in loose soil.

Overwinters as Overwinters as an adult.
Both sexes come to light.

Forewing length: 16-17mm.
Foodplant(s): oaks (Quercus spp.), elms (Ulmus spp.), Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), plantains (Plantago spp.), bedstraws (Galium spp.), violets (Viola spp.)
Flying: One generation, late September-November and March-April (hibernates)
